The Department is in the process of deploying a new satellite system for the purpose of navigation and point positioning. While designed primarily for military applications, the system poses great potential for civilian use as well. In particular, the use of GPS in a geodetic mode may yield rapid, accurate survey positions in three dimensions. Thus, in the near future, GPS will become a valuable new tool to the Corps surveyor.
