The two objectives of the report are to summarise the knowledge that is available on road noise for practical use now, and to define what research is required to obtain the further knowledge needed in the most economical way. Reviews are given on current knowledge of the reactions of people to noise and the probable effects of traffic noise on people (including the problems of relating physical and subjective measurements); knowledge of the noise characteristics of individual vehicles and prospects for reduction; and the noise generated by traffic and how it might be reduced by means of traffic control, highway design and building design. A discussion is given of the features desirable in practical noise criteria, the extent of the traffic noise problem, and the data required for a systematic cost/benefit analysis.
