This report has been prepared to serve as a guide in the selection of container and trailer restraint systems for use aboard ocean going vessels. The report first gives an historical summary and a discussion of the types of failure to which containers and trailers are subject, an illustrated description of systems used to secure above and below deck, and a comparison of systems to facilitate the user's selection of a suitable restraint system. The effects of ship motions on lashing and restraining systems are discussed. Existing methods of determining forces are reviewed and compared with the output of a computer program. Formulas are derived for the design of restraint systems.
