The report presents updated estimates of the long-term expected number of major accidents in transport in Norway. A major accident is defined as any accident in which at least 5 people are killed, it is estimated that 1.8 major transport accidents can be expected to occur in Norway each year. The preventability of major accidents is discussed. There is no reason to believe that major accidents are more difficult to prevent than small accidents. Techniques for making tradeoff between the prevention of small accidents and the prevention of major accidents are discussed.
