STS-26 was launched on September 29, 1988, and completed a successful 4-day mission with five crewmen aboard. The mission included deployment of a TDRS-C communications satellite. This flight followed 2 years and 8 months of preparation after the Challenger accident on January 28, 1986. The Medical Operations Branch at JSC and the Operational Medicine Office at Headquarters participated in many of the NASA return-to-flight review programs. The primary objective of the medical operations program is to assure the health and well-being of the flight crew during all phases of the mission. Specifically, the three main objectives are to: 1. Provide routine and contingency medical support; 2. Monitor, evaluate, and maintain crew health status throughout all phases of the mission; and 3. Test medical procedures and systems Detailed Supplementary Objectives (DSOs) designed to facilitate future missions.
