As part of the periodic evaluation of the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on the Long Island Expressway, an HOV lane user/non-user survey was conducted in January 1997. The survey included users of the HOV lanes during the HOV-reserved hours, HOV lane users during the non-reserved hours and general purpose lane users. From the initial opening in May 1994 through the summer of 1996, usage of the HOV lanes was restricted to carpools, buses and motorcycles between 6 AM and 8 PM, Monday to Friday. In the summer of 1996 the HOV-reserved hours were limited to the AM and PM peak periods -- from 6 AM to 10 AM and from 3 PM to 8 PM, Monday to Friday. When the survey was conducted, the modified HOV-reserved hours were in effect.
