The research covers the state of the art of the use of antistripping additives in asphaltic concrete and the development and evaluation of a testing procedure for determining antistripping additive effectiveness. A new procedure was developed that controls the degree of saturation of compacted specimens and subjects them to moisture under conditions not likely to create damage other than stripping. The procedure, simple and rapid enough to be practical for use in field laboratories, was used to evaluate the effects of storage and handling on antistripping additives, and it indicates that normal construction practices and testing conditions are not detrimental to chemically stable additives but that they do make unstable additives ineffective. The procedure was also found to correlate satisfactorily with observed moisture damage experience in the field. Guidelines for using antistripping additives were developed including a procedure for judging additive effectiveness.
