Investigations made in preparation of the Hermes and Columbus program by the European Space Agency concerning docking berthing systems for pressurized passage of crew and goods are presented. The investigations included the identification of requirements derived from the missions, the scenarios and the characteristics of participating spacecraft, the analysis of functions and operations, the identification of suitable implementation concepts and the preparation and improvement of simulation tools for the analysis of contact dynamics. An on-going plan for further investigations, including extensive computer simulations, manufacturing of models and testing in a motion facility, is presented.
