The problem of accidents at junctions, which feature largely in road accidents in Great Britain, is reviewed. An analysis of the national statistics of injury accidents indicates the extent to which accidents feature at different types of junction and the relative risks for different classes and ages of road user. Two techniques developed for studying junction accidents are described: one method assesses the safety of an individual junction by studying the vehicle movements which result in near accident or conflict situations: the other combines accident data for junctions of similar layout by location sampling. Examples of the application of these techniques to rural junctions are given and possible remedial measures are considered. (Author)
