The design criteria for Ariane 5 and Hermes are reviewed. The Ariane design is most strongly influenced by the fact that it must be compatible with widely differing payloads: satellites, space station elements, and Hermes. Ariane is based on two solid boosters for the launch phase and a cryogenic central section which assures most of the flight into orbit, although an upper stage is used at the end of the transfer. Hermes uses little of its own power to reach orbit. Its payload is carried in a cargo bay and can be launched autonomously or with a remote manipulator. The two flight crew members plus the payload specialist are housed in an ejectable cabin. The aerodynamics problems; structural design and materials; heat shielding; electrical equipment; hydropneumatics; software; and ground and in-orbit functioning are discussed.
