Literature review and examination of current practice indicates that the weakest aspect of the warrants for the location of grade separations and interchanges is the analysis of benefits. Travel benefits were analyzed by simulating travel behavior by means of trip distribution models. The study is limited to warrants for grade separations on land access roads and termination of land access roads. Alternative configurations of the location of grade separations were optimized according to the objective of efficiency in the construction and use of the whole road network. The criterion used was the maximization of the present net worth of benefits minus costs, subject to benefits, exceeding or equal to costs. A discussion of benefits and costs is given and the monetary quantification of benefits used in the analysis is presented. (Author)
