Since 1 October 1988 the legal demands for the right exterior rear view mirror have been changed. For cars which were put into use before this date, it was possible to use a plane or a convex mirror. After the mentioned date only the convex mirror is allowed to be used. In view of the training that the use of such mirrors requires, the Dutch Institute for Road Safety Research put a note of interrogation to the actual use of right exterior rear view mirrors. In order to get a first impression of the use of these mirrors, an inquiry has been done among drivers of cars provided with a right exterior rear view mirror. The assumption that the right exterior rear view mirror, especially the convex one, is not frequently used, is contradicted by the results of the investigation. It is shown that the majority part of the drivers use the right exterior rear view mirror without difficulties.
