The A 320 Airbus is the first civil aircraft equipped with an electrical flight control system. This system is based on very stringent dependability constraints, both in terms of safety and availability. The basic building blocks are control and monitoring computers. The control channel is in charge of the function of the computer, for instance, to slave a control surface. The monitoring channel is used to detect a possible failure of the control channel. A high level of redundancy is built in the system. Particular attention is drawn to possible external stresses. The system is built to tolerate both hardware and software design faults.
