Satellite observations of the atmosphere on a global scale began 18 years ago this month. In the intervening period, satellite sensors and techniques for the use of the data which these sensors provide have evolved to a high state of proficiency. This paper seeks to identify and quantify - to the extent possible - a number of the most dramatic cost benefits presently being derived from the United States' Operational Environmental Satellite System. A comparison is made with the annual budget for operating the satellite system.
