The report describes a study of motorcycle handling qualities, involving both transient and steady-state directional stability and control properties, and the development of test procedures suitable for the evaluation of these properties. The approach used in the study consisted of the application of both experimental and simulation techniques for the identification of the significant physical properties and performance measures with which to characterize the machine's accident avoidance capabilities. Emphasis was placed on evaluating the input-output relationships for the group of motorcycles in a series of constant speed-variable radius runs covering a range of cornering capability which encompasses normal operation. Results of this initial handling study indicate that substantial differences in the values of several performance parameters (for example, steady state control gains) exist among various motorcycle designs and that tire performance characteristics play a very significant role in the determination of these parameters.
