The Metroliners have been in revenue service for approximately two-and-one-half years. It has been impossible to increase the Metroliner service because of the low car availability. As a result of this low availability, the average car utility (fraction of time the car is in use or on standby) lies between 60 - 70%. This utility compares very unfavorably with utilities of 80% or more, achieved with other rail commuter cars. The principal objective of the study is to define a car modification program to achieve high Metroliner availability. (Author)
