The tests reported are part of a general study of pipe action under load. The study includes model analysis of the many variables and conditions pertaining to the problem, and prototype testing to help translate results from the model studies to full-scale design criteria for drainage-pipe installations beneath airfield facilities and roads. The tests being reported were directed particularly toward assessing the effect on a shallow-buried, flexible pipe of repeated passage of a heavy wheel load simulating an aircraft landing gear.
