Activities of ESA in the field of satellite-based land mobile services are reviewed. Selection of services which could best be provided by satellite, in the context of the terrestrial complement to a future pan-European cellular system is discussed. The impact on system architecture is assessed. A system demonstration planned for the beginning of 1987 and currently in the stage of hardware design is presented. An automatic repeat request scheme and a CDMA approach, are presented and justified.
