The report presents a series of studies in which an occlusion technique for measuring the driver's attentional demand (see PB-170 879) was applied in various situations. The effect of vehicular dynamics on attentional demand was studied by comparing the effect of a 20 deg. free play of the steering wheel with a 24 deg. free play. In a second study, the driver was allowed to vary both speed and occlusion time and results were compared with the attentional demand when speed and occlusion were separately varied by the driver. The occlusion technique was tried in traffic situations. Drivers were able to use the apparatus under these conditions. An attempt was made to determine information density for various roads.
