The Manual represents the culmination of a study funded by the Department of Transportation to evaluate eight historic railroad stations which have been preserved and adapted for new uses. The purpose of the manual is to assist individuals as well as local government officials, preservationists, architects and developers interested in undertaking railroad station recycling projects in their own communities. The publication discusses basic guidelines for successful projects, and feasibility. Emphasis is placed on the economic feasibility of adaptive reuse of historic stations. The manual raises issues which must be resolved during the reuse process and poses possible solutions to these issues as they apply to particular types of projects. The potential is also addressed for the inclusion of intermodal transportation centers in recycled stations. The manual is a useful guide not just for preservationists and planners but also for all readers who desire to make better use of existing resources in their communities.
