Three papers related to the conspicuity of trucks and collisions between cars and trucks are published. The first paper, a review of the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) data, indicates that most fatal car-into-truck accidents occur during hours of darkness, pointing to a potential lack of nighttime truck conspicuity. The second paper, a review of literature on conspicuity and retroreflectorization, suggests that retroreflectorization of trucks is likely to increase their nighttime conspicuity. The third report, an exploratory field study, indicates that conspicuity-enhancing retroreflective treatments applied to the rear and sides of trucks caused drivers to look at the trucks more often and at greater distances.
