The objective of the project is to determine the long-term corrosion protection and visibility/safety characteristics of a powder coated guide-rail element as compared to a standard glavanized rail element. Test sections were placed on two roadways, in an urban and a rural setting. Many nicks and scratches occurred during the installation; damage also occurred from in-service conditions, snow plows, etc. The damaged areas rusted and the polyester coating was undercut and started to peel. Road film built up on the surface and negated the benefits of a white coating. The use of polyester coated guide-rail is not recommended. The white coating is of no benefit to the motorist and the coating is easily damaged.
