The Swedish Navy uses a remotely piloted vehicle to investigate unidentified objects on the sea bed. This report studies two solutions to the problem arising when free-floating particles occlude the object in the camera field of view. The first solution is based on using a single frame at a time to detect particle-like objects and removing them by filtering the frame. The second solution uses two consecutive frames to estimate the dominant image motion. Particles whose motion is inconsistent with the dominant motion are removed. The solutions have been judged based on their results on genuine underwater sequences.
