Hazards to satellites are dealt with as a separate subject, related however to reliability and safety. The hazard concept is treated in terms of risks during the phases of a project to satellite hardware from environment, operators, interfaces, etc. The detection of risks via energy considerations is discussed. It is suggested that for the immediate future more emphasis must be given to establishing a planned approach to the practical control of hazards rather than increasing the degree of sophistication in other already well established areas of product assurance.
