A great deal of research literature focuses on the question of how to dispatch drivers to loads. What has not been adequately examined is the question of when dispatching decisions should be made. Herein, the authors address this research question using discrete event system simulation and a variety of metrics in an assortment of potential operational settings. It is demonstrated that traditional truckload dispatching systems seem to operate best when dispatching decisions are made approximately 8 hours prior to the scheduled pick-up time.
