An in-depth study conducted by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) Office of Safety and Fire Protection (SAFP), clearly indicated that immediate and long-term benefits could be derived by computerizing all of the safety information it collects. SAFP believes that the Computerized Safety Information and Data Analysis System (SIDAS) is an appropriate approach toward achieving this objective. The paper discusses the process used in establishing and expanding the WMATA SIDAS. Also featured is a compendium of bus, rail, construction and employee industrial safety statistics, and fire incidents. The report presents and compares data pertaining to accidents and injuries over the years of WMATA operations and, on a preceding year-present year format.
