If road traffic signs are to be effective they must convey their message to the motorist at a safe distance at night, during the day, and in twilight conditions. A major problem concerns the durability of signs. It has been proposed that signs should be fully reflectorized in order to solve this. Experiments and surveys were conducted to determine whether fully reflectorized signs are superior to partially reflectorized signs. Due to conflicts between conspicuity, costs, manufacturing techniques, durability and purchasing methods this is not an easy question to answer.
