Syncom C is the third in a series of three authorized flights designed to provide research and development experience with synchronous altitude communications satellites. Upon confirmation that the spacecraft has achieved orbit it will be named Syncom III. The mission objectives are: 1) To gain experience with a communication satellite in a synchronous orbit of near-zero inclination and to develop the capability of launching a satellite into such an orbit; 2) To obtain data on the effects of earth triaxiality on the synchronous orbit; 3) To provide an experimental-operational communications link between the United States and the Far East, as requested by the DOD; and 4) To test the life of communications satellite components at synchronous altitude.
