The modern rates of the development of the fisheries industry evoke the need for the development of new, more effective equipment and techniques for catching fish. However, the development of an essentially new design of a trawl, or the alteration of the actual principle of its operation, is possible only under the condition of a comprehensive study of the behavior of the fish in the catching zone. This complex problem can be solved only with the aid of underwater observations. For a study of the reactions of fish and for observing the operation of a trawl, the specialist of the AtlantNIRO proposed the construction of a towed underwater vehicle. Its planning was accomplished by a group of designers of the Klayped branch of the 'Giprorybflot' under the supervision of A. P. Ryabchikov and V. N. Potapov. The single-seater submarine observation vehicle 'Atlant-1' (Fig.1) is a towed underwater glider (bathyplane), having excess buoyancy and diving under the effect of the hydrodynamic forces of the wings. With the aid of the control rudders, the cruising attitude is altered, while with the aid of controlling the length of the towing cable, the distance to the towing vessel is adjusted. (Author)
