The effect of the roughness of a painted surface on the head resistance of an aircraft is investigated by using a physical model of flow past such a surface. It is found that a surface roughness of 2 to 10 microns has a noticeable effect on the head resistance of the aircraft and that the density of the surface projections determines the friction coefficient increment. It is further shown that the use of polyurethane coatings, rather than paint coatings, makes it possible to reduce the head resistance of the aircraft and its fuel consumption by 2%.
