Several aspects of the Hipparcos satellite are presented. In particular the orbit, the environmental conditions, the attitude control concept, the data handling and processing, and the operational concept, are described. The actual design of the satellite, is presented. The satellite payload, dedicated to the on board experiments, is given. The satellite characteristics, the mass budget, the power budget for preoperational and operational periods, and the electrical subsystems are listed. A block diagram of the main measurement and operational functions involved during mission, is shown.
