This report describes the estimation of gross travel by each type of road vehicle on the various classes of public road in Ireland for the year 1980. The estimate is arrived at by combining hourly travel patterns from self recording permanent traffic stations with data from visual classification counts. There is comment on sample size and location for visual counts and on methods of analysis and expansion of short term observations to total network and year round travel and on how this affects statistical confidence intervals.
