This manual describes an interim procedure for calculating road traffic noise pending the publication of the results of a three year research project, funded by the Department of Transport, concerning road traffic noise on freeways and major arterial roads. One of the aims of this research, which is being conducted by the NITRR, CSIR, is to develop a prediction method specifically adapted to South African traffic and climatic conditions. In order to aid planning agencies and developers in decision making in the intervening period this interim procedure has been prepared, the results of which should not vary significantly from the final technique and decision made now should therefore remain valid.
