The system involves the movement of a milling, or other tools, along the circumference of a large-diameter tank-section in order to accommodate the tremendous relative travel involved, often in excess of 150 feet, during milling operations on extremely large space vehicles. The electro-optical system maintains a two-axis alignment between the tool and tool guide. The apparatus insures 'squared' end surfaces of tank sections which are welded together to principally form the body of a space vehicle.
