Glare in the daytime that was produced or modified by the vehicle was measured to determine the current state of knowledge of glare as found in the literature, and to determine ways of measuring the amount of glare produced by a given vehicle. The research involved library, laboratory, and roadway phases. The library phase indicated a straight forward relationship between the illuminance from a glare source and its position, upon foveal vision. It also indicated that the effects of multiple glare sources were simply additive. Measurements were made of the amount of glare inherent in each of five new 1968 automobiles, each of a different American manufacturer. The conclusion was drawn that because the glare encountered both in the literature, in the laboratory tests and during the testing from a vehicle, caused a decrement in performance, glare should not be present in the driver's field of view.
