The report presents - the results of a study that was conducted to determine what traffic information techniques might be used to cause drivers to divert around congested parts of the highway system. The results of the study indicate that drivers prefer visual techniques to vocal techniques. Of the different devices tested a changeable message matrix sign was the most preferred. However, no conclusive evidence could be found that would indicate that this type of device would cause more drivers to divert around a congested section of highway than the other type of devices tested.
