The general status of the SPOT program, an optical Earth observation satellite system giving permanent data source for geographic information, land use, urban planning, and agriculture applications, is described. It is also a tool for local environment issue studies such as deforestation, coastal zone evolutions, urban pressions, evaluation of impacts of civil engineering constructions, etc. It offers the following main features: high resolution, 10 and 20 m; stereo coverage capability offering terrain modeling capability; and high revisit capability. SPOT 1, 2, 3, and 4 are described. Passengers for different missions and experiments on SPOT 4 and the vegetation instrument are described. The high resolution ground optical mission and synthetic aperture radar mission follow on programs are outlined.
