This research project was designed and undertaken to evaluate the feasibility of carrier-based fitness-for-duty testing. More specifically, this project sought to establish the degree of feasibility of using an affordable, compact, in-vehicle device to test commercial motor vehicle drivers' fitness for duty. The research objectives were to investigate the feasibility of using downsized hardward and software in commercial motor vehicles operated away from terminal locations for lengthy periods, to estimate the reliability and cost effectiveness of the technologies, and to determine driver and management acceptance of fitness-for-duty testing.
