The design of a successor to the Concorde with a long haul range of 5500 nautical miles is discussed. The ability of the engine and airframe to produce this range economically is briefly examined. Some off design implications of choice of cruise Mach number on matching and subsonic performance are outlined. Environmental requirements which can be controlled or influenced by engine design are discussed and the key issues noted. Consequent requirements for engine cycle variability are defined and two possibilities assessed.
