The Physiological Systems Experiment (PSE) payload is sponsored by the Center for Cell Research (CCR), located at the Pennsylvania State University, in concert with its affiliate, Genentech, Inc., of South San Francisco, CA. PSE is scheduled to fly on STS-41. This is the first in a series of five PSE flights using physiological changes experienced in weightlessness to facilitate studies of potential new therapies for medical disorders. Rats used as test subjects will be housed in two Animal Enclosure Modules (AEM) located in the Orbiter middeck. The enclosed Mission Operation Report provides additional information on this payload. The CCR is a Center for the Commercial Development of Space (CCDS) sponsored by the Office of Commercial Programs. STS-41, with Ulysses as its primary mission, is planned for launch in October 1990.
