The focus of the study is on the contribution of emissions from gasoline-fueled motor vehicles to fine ambient carbonaceous PM. These emissions include PM emissions from the tailpipe, tire wear and brake wear. VOC emissions from gasoline vehicles which can lead to the formation of PM in the atmosphere are also investigated. In addition, exhaust PM emissions from diesel vehicles and their impact on ambient PM levels are also reviewed. Two general approaches have been used to estimate the contribution of specific PM emission sources to ambient PM levels. The study evaluates the application of both types of modeling to the Los Angeles and Philadelphia areas.
