A production air cushion restraint system, developed by Volvo for their 1975 Model 244, was upgraded to provide 40 mph barrier equivalent velocity (BEV) frontal impact protection for the driver and front seat passenger. The effort included a series of vehicle barrier crashes and a large amount of developmental sled testing. The 1979 Volvo 242 and 244 production seat belt restraints were also upgraded; a simple modification allowed the protection of front seat occupants at 35 mph BEV. This was again accomplished through developmental sled testing and an evaluative barrier impact.
