A subsatellite program is proposed in combination with Spacelab. This subsatellite is modular with a view to cost effectiveness and flexibility for the user and will be launched from Spacelab. During the Spacelab mission, the satellite will point at earth as well as Spacelab. Its distance from Spacelab will be 2000 km; after termination of the Spacelab mission the satellite will be transferred to an orbit over 500 km in order to guarantee a life of at least two years for long duration experiments. A relatively small propulsion unit will be sufficient for these maneuvers.
