In order to achieve maximum operational effectiveness with an acceptable crew workload, the new generation of NATO fighter aircraft will contain a significant degree of automation and computer support for the crew. One key area of support is computer aided tactics, which help the crewman to assess the complex air battle situation, select appropriate targets, and plan the best method of attack. A microcomputer tactical aid called MITAC is described. By computing a range of possible aircraft and missile flight paths and processing the results through a sequence of tactical flight rules, MITAC can offer the crewman useful advice on recommended attacks and their consequences. It provides good insight into the sort of facility that could be available in the next generation of fighter cockpits.
