An analysis was made concerning the use of artificial birds in bird impact testing of aircraft transparencies. Results of this analysis, including impact measurements at a nominal velocity of 500 fps, indicated that the used of artificial birds for impact testing at these conditions is impractical. This follows from the importance and difficulty of simulating the shear strength characteristics of real birds in transparency impacts. Keywords: Transparency testing; bird impacts; Artificial birds; and Reliability.
