Engineering support given to ESA in the task of assembling model Spacelab payloads suitable for the demonstration mission is described in a six volume report. Three payload models (with options) were assembled. These include: (1) a microgravity mission for life science radiation experiments, space technology, and for scanning astrophysics experimentation; (2) an earth oriented mission for earth observation and atmospheric physics experimentation; and (3) an astrophysics experimental instrument array. Volume one summarizes the study results for each of the payloads in both engineering and cost sharing indexes terms.
