Extensive material substitution and resurging of the domestic automotive fleet, as well as the introduction of new technologies, will require major changes in the techniques and equipment used in the various manufacturing processes employed in the production of automobiles. The purpose of this report is to document (and analyze) the publically available data on current and projected motor vehicle production processes and equipment and to report on impending changes. This report provides an overview of recent trends and developments in the automotive manufacturing processes, with emphasis placed on technology and equipment. Special attention is paid to key issues, the reaction by the process technology to these issues, new development and specific applications and trends in the use of light weight materials. Major sections are devoted to economic and market conditions, processes and equipment, and manufacturing materials.
