In the past, to express the effects of equipment reliability and maintenance problems on the probability that an equipment would be operable at a time when needed, a number of different forms of an expression intended to express the availability of equipment have been generated. In this paper a different approach has been formulated which considers the probability of repair as the controlling input. From this expression it is possible to relate the demands for spare parts and the needs for attaining specified levels of training for technicians as well as equipment reliability to the accomplishment of missions for which the ship is designed.
