The importance of fighter aircraft engine development as the leading edge of technological development is outlined. It is expected that fighter engines of the next century will continue to follow the trends already established. Thrust over weight ratios will increase and fuel consumption and costs will be reduced. The use of composites will become more widespread. It is likely that development of new materials, manufacturing processes, and aerodynamic and thermodynamic techniques will be the major areas of technological development.
