The paper presents a summary of present weather satellite capabilities and indicates that its full potential has only begun to be realized. Weather satellites are providing a wide variety of direct, continuing benefits to environmental observation and prediction programs in the United States and overseas. Major applications have been in weather analysis and forecasting services but satellite data are used to an increasing extent in other environmental services - maritime activities, hydrology, space disturbance monitoring, and others. Examples are given to show how satellites are contributin to better weather forecasts, more accurate maritime bulletins, and more reliable warnings of environmental hazards. (Author)
